Fife Leads Oregon Past Stanford

Oregon had this one wrapped up by halftime.

Jason Fife threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score Saturday as the No. 19 Ducks bounced back from two consecutive defeats with a 41-14 win over Stanford at Eugene, Ore.

“It was a great effort in the first half, a workmanlike effort in the second,” Coach Mike Bellotti said. “It’s much more fun to sit here and talk about this after a win, making ourselves bowl eligible, and ensuring a winning season.”

Oregon, coming off home losses to Arizona State and USC, beat Stanford for only the second time in six tries at Autzen Stadium but started slow.

“We weren’t doing the little things again, and it kind of scared me at first,” Fife said.

The Ducks, 7-2 overall, 3-2 in the conference, won without starting tailback Onterrio Smith, sidelined with a minor knee injury that is not expected to keep him out next week against Washington State.

Terrence Whitehead rushed for 132 yards in 29 carries in place of Smith, the conference’s leading rusher.

With the exception of Jason Siegel’s field goal with 1:20 left, the Ducks did all their scoring in the first half -- building a 38-7 lead by halftime.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Kyle Matter completed nine of 19 passes for 71 yards for Stanford (2-6, 1-4). Matter started in place of Chris Lewis, who had an injured shoulder.

The Cardinal handed Oregon its only loss last season en route to its second consecutive conference title and a No. 2 national ranking.

Oregon State 38, Arizona 3 -- Steven Jackson rushed for 134 yards and two touchdowns as the Beavers (6-3, 2-3) defeated the Wildcats (3-6, 0-5) at Corvallis, Ore.

Derek Anderson passed for 239 yards and a score for Oregon State, which won its second in a row.

Arizona, which has lost five in a row and remained the only winless team in the Pac-10, had minus-23 yards rushing and 93 yards overall.
