It Was Diversity Day, but Parents Missed the Point

Re “Parents Angered by Lesbian’s Talk at School,” Oct. 26:

I hope the irony of this situation is not lost on any who read the article. We have a very intolerant society in regard to many minorities -- homosexuals included. Those parents who complained about a lesbian speaking at a school diversity day are promoting a societal intolerance that is already pervasive.

Their suggestion to leave “moral education” to parents would be fine if they were actually educating their children. What they are doing is presenting a biased opinion in hopes of swaying their children’s beliefs. If this degree of subjective teaching pervaded our schools, our young academicians would be worse off than they are now.

Kudos to Principal Kristine Robertson for trying to teach something more than math and English. Maybe this teaching of tolerance will help prevent the beating and killing of people because of their sexual orientation. Ms. Robertson, please don’t apologize to those parents: You’ve done nothing that warrants an apology.
