Enron Sign Doesn’t Fit the Times

Enron Corp. made its Houston headquarters a little less conspicuous over the weekend.

The failed energy giant’s trademark “tilted-E” signs were removed from outside the glass 50-story building, as was a wall mount of the logo at a lobby reception desk that was visible from the street.

“The Enron name is associated with our past, and we’re trying to move forward,” spokeswoman Karen Denne said Monday.

The two outside stainless steel signs accentuated by red, blue and green lights were put in storage, Denne said. The signs and other surplus equipment and memorabilia will be sold at auctions next year to raise money for the firm’s creditors.

The featured vowel at Enron’s auction Dec. 3-5 should be the rotating black tilted “E” that once lighted up part of the lobby, Denne said.

A similar steel “E” without the colored lights sold for $44,000 at an auction in September.
