British Library saves rare music archives
The Elgin Marbles are staying put in Britain, and so is a comparable treasure nearly lost when the archives of London’s Royal Philharmonic Society went on the block this week.
The 189-year-old collection, which includes such rarities as the original manuscript of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, commissioned by the society, was bought by the British Library for about $1.5 million after a last-minute donation of about $237,000 from the U.K. national Heritage Lottery Fund.
The collection includes other original scores and correspondence from such composers as Tchaikovsky, Berlioz and Liszt.
