AIDS Is the Top Cause of Death Among Women

AIDS is the leading killer of women in South Africa and is killing more people every year, said a government study. AIDS-related illnesses were responsible for 9.8% of female deaths in South Africa in 2001, up from 5.6% in 1997, the survey by Statistics South Africa showed.
The percentage of AIDS-related deaths among all South Africans rose to 8.7% in 2001 from 4.6% in 1997, the report said.
