Zsa Zsa Gabor Hurt in Crash

Actress Zsa Zsa Gabor was in serious condition Thursday, the day after a convertible in which she was riding slammed into a light pole in West Hollywood.

The car, driven by an unidentified man, jumped the curb at Sunset Boulevard and Sweetzer Avenue and hit the pole about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Bruce Thomas.

Gabor, 85, riding in the passenger seat and not wearing a seat belt, “was thrown about the vehicle and sustained some serious injuries,” Thomas said.

The driver, who was wearing a seat belt, suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene, Thomas said.

Gabor was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where a spokeswoman said she remained in serious condition Thursday. A spokesman for her husband, Prince Frederic von Anhalt, said in a statement that she suffered broken bones and cuts.

Born in Hungary, Gabor has been married eight times. Among her husbands were actor George Sanders and hotel magnate Conrad Hilton. Gabor has also been linked to men ranging from John F. Kennedy to billionaire J. Paul Getty, has penned several autobiographies and has cultivated an image as one of America’s last glamour queens.

She has appeared in more than 75 movies; many, such as “Touch of Evil,” “The Story of Three Loves,” “The Girl in the Kremlin” and John Huston’s “Moulin Rouge,” date from the mid-20th century.

She was in the limelight again in 1989 when she slapped a Beverly Hills police officer who had pulled her over in her custom-made Rolls-Royce Corniche convertible for having expired license tags.

She was fined and sentenced to three days in jail. She also was ordered to visit a psychiatrist and to perform 120 hours of community service at a women’s shelter.
