Bottom of the eighth, runners on first and second, two out: Jason Giambi lines a hard single off the glove of Scott Spiezio (a play Spiezio usually makes). The ball deflects behind second baseman Adam Kennedy, who was racing to back up Spiezio, allowing Alfonso Soriano to score the tying run.

Angel fans around the Southland let out a collective groan when Mike Scioscia went to Schoeneweis instead of Troy Percival with Giambi batting in the eighth. Giambi was five for 20 in his career off Schoeneweis, with two doubles. Against Percival, Giambi was 0 for 5, with five strikeouts.

Jarrod Washburn pitched out of trouble all night, thanks to some timely double plays. The Angels turned only eight double plays in the 206 innings Washburn pitched this season, the worst ratio in the majors, but they turned four in seven innings Tuesday, bailing Washburn out of some jams.

Roger Clemens did not look like himself. Usually a pitcher who challenges hitters, Clemens backed off the mound several times, threw to first often, and shook off his catcher a lot. His aggressive attitude was nowhere to be found, one of the reasons he didn’t make it out of the sixth inning.
