THE BIG PLAYS

Everyone will talk about Troy Percival striking out Derek Jeter, but if Garret Anderson and Troy Glaus don’t homer in the eighth, Percival never pitches. The Angels had just blown a 4-0 lead, and it seemed they would be down 2-0 in the series until the consecutive homers put them back in control of the game and quieted the Yankee faithful.

Aggressive baserunning led to three Angel runs. Shawn Wooten went from first to third on a single in the second, scoring on the next play. In the third, Garret Anderson tagged up and took second on Troy Glaus’ fly to left, scoring on Scott Spiezio’s single. In the ninth, Anderson went from first to third on Glaus’ single, scoring on Spiezio’s hit.

THE BIG LETDOWN

It seemed as if the Angel jinx was alive and well when Benji Gil failed to turn the double play and bounced his throw past Scott Spiezio at first base in the sixth inning. When Alfonso Soriano followed with a two-run homer, giving the Yankees the lead for the first time, you could almost hear the ghost of Gene Autry crying.

DID YOU NOTICE?

Orlando Hernandez, so ineffective as a starter that Manager Joe Torre sent him to the bullpen for the playoffs, was visibly annoyed at Derek Jeter after Jeter made a throwing error in the seventh. The error did not lead to a run, but Hernandez made two mistakes that cost the Yankees the game, giving up homers to Anderson and Glaus in the eighth.
