Italian police have arrested three Egyptians in a port town near Rome and are investigating whether they were planning an attack on a U.S. military cemetery, authorities said Saturday.

Explosives and a map of the cemetery were found in the men’s apartment in Anzio, about 35 miles south of Rome, after police conducted a raid Friday.

Police officials in Rome confirmed the arrests but declined to immediately give details Saturday.

The map of the Nettuno cemetery had two of its entrances marked, said a U.S. official in Rome, speaking on condition of anonymity. The official confirmed news reports that more than 4 pounds of TNT were found.

Security at the cemetery, which draws tourists and relatives of the U.S. military personnel buried there, was stepped up after the Sept. 11 attacks.

The identities of the three men arrested were not immediately released, but Italian news reports said they worked as fishermen in Anzio.
