A man, his wife and their two young sons were found shot to death Monday in San Jose in what appeared to be a murder-suicide, police said.

A friend found the bodies about 1:15 p.m. in the family’s modest house, about a quarter of a mile east of California Highway 101, said Lt. Glenn McCourtie, commander of the San Jose Police Department’s homicide division.

The man, woman and boys, about 4 and 2 years old, apparently had all died of gunshot wounds, McCourtie said. He said a gun was recovered at the scene.

The names of the victims were withheld, pending positive identification and notification of relatives.

McCourtie said the motive for the killings had not been established, “but we presume it’s a murder-suicide.”

He said further details about the crime would not be released until the police investigation had progressed, and the Santa Clara County coroner’s office had completed the autopsies.
