The New York Mets exercised their $8-million contract option on second baseman Roberto Alomar on Tuesday and waived pitcher Satoru Komiyama.

Alomar, acquired from Cleveland in a seven-player trade in December, batted .266, his lowest batting average since his rookie year of 1988. He had 11 home runs and 53 runs batted in.

The Mets declined a $1-million option on Komiyama, signed as a free agent in December. He was 0-3 with a 5.61 earned-run average in 25 games with New York.

Tom Gamboa, attacked by two fans during a September game at Chicago’s Comiskey Park, has been moved from first base coach to bullpen coach by Kansas City.

Gamboa, 54, said General Manager Allard Baird didn’t give him a reason for the switch.

Baird said Tuesday the move wasn’t related to the incident in Chicago, in which William Ligue Jr. and his 15-year-old son came out of the stands and pummeled Gamboa until Royal players stormed out of the dugout.

On Tuesday, the teenager was in juvenile court as prosecutors refiled charges of aggravated battery and mob action against a state police officer, who was working as a security guard at the game. The charges had been dropped shortly after the attack.

The boy, who remains in custody, faces the same charges for the Gamboa beating. Ligue has been charged with aggravated battery.
