If Needed, Leach Is Ready to Start

Jason Leach hopes he doesn’t have to make the first start of his USC career Saturday against California.

But if he is called on, Leach says he’ll be prepared.

“I’m ready to go,” he said Wednesday after practice.

The sophomore from La Puente Bishop Amat High might be needed to fill the considerably large shoes of Troy Polamalu, the Trojans’ All-American strong safety. Polamalu suffered a high right ankle sprain last week against Washington State and is questionable for Saturday’s game.

“It would make me more happy if he came back,” Leach said of Polamalu. “That would be a big help for our defense.”

Polamalu, who had an MRI exam Wednesday, isn’t so sure.

“He’s doing awesome,” Polamalu said of Leach. “There’s no need for me to come back.”

Polamalu was being gracious, but Coach Pete Carroll indicated there isn’t a dramatic drop-off in ability with Leach at strong safety. Leach leads USC with two interceptions, including one in the fourth quarter against Washington State that led to a touchdown.

“Jason has done really well for us,” Carroll said. “The fact that he has been playing in games all along and competing under pressure really helps him feel comfortable.”

Polamalu, who sat out practice again Wednesday, said his ankle is responding to rehabilitation. A decision on whether he can play probably won’t be made until game time.

In his first three seasons at USC, Kareem Kelly averaged 15.8 yards per catch. This season, he is averaging 9.8 yards in the Trojans’ short-passing scheme.

“My role has changed,” Kelly acknowledged. “I’m just playing within the game plan, running a lot of slants and crossing routes.”

Kelly, who had eight catches for only 66 yards against Washington State, said the Trojans are capable of completing deep passes with a group of speedy receivers that includes himself, Keary Colbert and Mike Williams.

“It all depends on what the defense gives us and tries to take away,” he said. “But there’s no frustration. I’m having a good time.”

Ryan Killeen will continue to handle all kicking duties, Carroll said. David Davis, USC’s other kicker, is recovering from an injury to his left (kicking) leg.
