Verizon Communications Inc. received court approval to give work-time credit to as many as 12,500 female workers who took maternity or pregnancy leave, entitling them to millions of dollars more in pension benefits, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission said.

Verizon predecessors Nynex and Bell Atlantic were accused of violating federal law by not counting time on pregnancy and maternity leave toward a worker’s pension from 1965 to 1979, and on child-care leave until 1983.

The biggest U.S. local-telephone company agreed to give the credit to workers in 13 Eastern states and the District of Columbia.
