Bhutto Rejected for 2 More Parliament Races
Pakistani election officials rejected former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto’s final two applications to run for Parliament in October, prompting scattered protests and insistence from Bhutto that she would campaign anyway.
The government has said Bhutto will face arrest if she returns, and it was unclear whether she would end her self-imposed exile in London and the United Arab Emirates.
Officials said Bhutto could not run because of convictions in absentia on corruption charges. About 2,000 people protested in Larkana, her hometown, and about 500 in Karachi, the biggest city.
