State Declares Tap Water in City Now Safe to Drink
Tap water in Santa Fe Springs was deemed safe to drink after a liquid detergent that had contaminated the system was flushed out, officials said Sunday.
Officials turned off the city’s water supply and left notices warning people not to drink the water at about 3,500 homes and businesses in a 2-mile-square area after the substance spilled into the system Friday afternoon.
The detergent, typically used to treat metal parts, can cause nausea and diarrhea but did not cause any illnesses, said Fire Department Battalion Chief Scott Goodwin.
A private firm and the county health department tested the water before the state Department of Health Services declared it safe about 11:30 p.m. Saturday, he said.
Officials were still investigating the cause of the spill.
