Focus on the Goals of a War with Iraq

The U.N. has authorized inspections of Iraq to search for weapons of mass destruction. We have some pretty good ideas about where to look. Let’s visit a suspicious place with a team of inspectors and Special Forces soldiers to protect them. We drop in from the air and shoot nobody unless shot at. We do a local inspection, and if the weapons are found, we destroy them quickly and get out. Then we drop in on another suspicious place. This is better than a mass invasion. When hard evidence for weapons of mass destruction is found, we thereby justify firmer action, including war if necessary.

Before considering attacking Iraq, why don’t we find Osama bin Laden and break up Al Qaeda? Of course, if Bin Laden is hiding out in Iraq, and/or Saddam Hussein is offering him safe sanctuary, well, maybe then....

If the Arabs are truly sick of Western interference, then they should police Hussein themselves, if for no other reason than that Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction pose a danger to them, and allocate a desirable section of their more than 5 million collective square miles as a new Palestinian homeland. Percentage-wise, this would be a tiny sacrifice compared with Israel doing the same, and it would place the Palestinians near neighbors sympathetic to their cause.
