Campaigning Begins for Presidential Race
Ecuador kicked off the campaign for October’s presidential election, the first national vote since an Indian uprising backed by military officers toppled President Jamil Mahuad two years ago and installed his vice president, Gustavo Noboa.
Banana millionaire Alvaro Noboa, who is not related to the current president, leads the pack of 10 candidates. He is backed by a party he created after he lost his first bid for president to Mahuad in 1998. However, it is unclear who is likely to join him in a November runoff, if no one wins outright.
