The state Justice Department said it has uncovered a methamphetamine dump site in Black Star Canyon.

Officials said Wednesday that they discovered 20 black trash bags along a private road. The bags contained toxic chemical waste, glassware, antifreeze containers and other materials.

Investigators were most intrigued by the Canadian labels on many chemical canisters, said drug task force Cmdr. Craig Hammer. Officials said drug labs are increasingly using chemicals from Canada, where they can be obtained more easily.

About 45 pounds of methamphetamines may have been made with the items, he said.

The antifreeze bottles contained residue of the acid used in preparing methamphetamines. Contaminated sheets, clothing, shoes, gloves and respirators also were found.

Authorities are now trying to find the lab. They were alerted to the dump site by a tip.
