Confession Clears Men in ‘Wilding,’ Lawyer Says
A lawyer for three men convicted of the 1989 “wilding” rape and beating of a jogger in New York’s Central Park said he hopes to clear their names with a confession from a convicted murderer.
Michael Warren said Matias Reyes, 31, a convicted killer and rapist, has told defense investigators he attacked the woman and that prosecutors have told him his DNA matches a sample found at the scene.
Reyes is serving 33 years to life on unrelated charges. Warren said the inmate would not face charges in the 1989 attack because the statute of limitations has expired.
The victim, a 28-year-old investment banker, was near death when police found her. She was in a coma 12 days.
Police rounded up more than 30 teens they suspected had been part of a rampage they called wilding; five were tried and convicted.
