Mark 9/11 by Reflecting Quietly With Others

As I read articles about various Sept. 11 observances, I see words used like “respectful” and “tasteful,” but the most important word is missing: “genuine.” We have lost the ability as a culture to honor the moment, and well-meaning media and politicians cheapen those who sacrificed and died in their frantic rush to get out one more book, TV special or political photo op.

The barrage of events leaves sensible citizens numb; both the dead and the living deserve better. Is there some unexplored angle or viewpoint that needs to be reviewed? Do those in the obligatory cross-section of air passengers’ widows and firefighters’ orphaned children pressed again into the spotlight with our leaders realize they’re being manipulated? Is it so absurd to think it would be appropriate to have quiet group reflection and stress our brotherhood as Americans?
