From Times Staff Reports
A transient who police believe is responsible for as many as 40 thefts in the San Fernando Valley since early August has been charged with commercial burglary and receiving stolen property.
Roger Wayne Gilbert, 42, allegedly pried metal covers from sidewalk utility boxes and heaved them through windows and glass doors to gain entry to businesses in the West Valley and Van Nuys area, Deputy Dist. Atty. Philip Wynn said.
Gilbert pleaded not guilty to the charges.
