Heritage Seems to Be a Problem for Vargas

Share

So Fernando Vargas thinks he is a “real Mexican”? As a Mexican American, I am offended by this notion. I don’t identify with a common street thug like Vargas, and he is the last person I would want to represent my culture. I don’t know how much time he has actually spent in Mexico, but “real Mexicans” are a respectful, courteous people, who would have no respect for a gangbanger.

Oscar De La Hoya, on the other hand, is the type of person Mexican Americans can take pride in. He has achieved the success we would want for ourselves and our children. This Mexican will be rooting for De La Hoya to administer the worst beating of Vargas’ life.

Vargas has talent, but to be a “real Mexican” one has to act like one. As long as he keeps associating with the same thugs, he will never have my respect.

Memo to Fernando Vargas: Like you, I was born in the United States, which makes me an American--period! Both of my parents were born in Mexico. They are Mexicans. If you should ever apply for a passport, you would be issued an American passport and listed as an American under “nationality.” I hope that doesn’t offend you.
