WHEN UCLA HAS THE BALL

The Bruins rushed for 215 yards last week by overwhelming an undersized Colorado State front. Oklahoma State, which employs a 4-2 defense with a five-man secondary, is much larger and has been stingy against the run. Both Cowboy opponents, however, passed the ball effectively, so this is an opportune time for Bruin quarterback Cory Paus to gain momentum after a so-so opener. Freshman quarterback Drew Olson will play at least one series again. UCLA scored its first touchdown last week on a 49-yard reverse by freshman receiver Junior Taylor. Expect more trick plays from Coach Bob Toledo, who is seeking ways to get the ball in the hands of potential game-breakers such as Taylor, Tyler Ebell and Craig Bragg.

WHEN OKLAHOMA STATE HAS THE BALL

The Cowboys use a no-huddle offense and spread the field with receivers. Quarterback Josh Fields, who passed for a career-high 261 yards last week against Northern Iowa, throws mostly medium-range passes and his receivers run well after the catch. Rashaun Woods is the most dangerous weapon and will be guarded by cornerback Ricky Manning. Woods has 19 catches for 301 yards and three touchdowns after leading the Big 12 with 80 catches and 1,023 receiving yards last season. The Cowboys could find it difficult to run against a strong Bruin front seven. Besides left tackle Kyle Eaton, who has 29 starts, Oklahoma State’s line is inexperienced.

KEYS TO UCLA VICTORY

1. Containing the potent Cowboy passing game, especially Woods.

2. Improving special teams play.

3. Establishing a running attack against a Cowboy defense that has given up only 71 yards a game on the ground.
