Davis Signs Bill to Track Oil Tankers
Gov. Gray Davis has signed a bill by Assemblywoman Hannah-Beth Jackson that requires shippers of crude oil between San Francisco and Los Angeles to submit quarterly reports on how much oil they are moving and the routes tankers take through the ocean.
“With the Bush Administration fighting for greater control to expand drilling for oil off California’s coasts, we may sadly see increased oil drilling and tankering off our fragile coast,” Jackson said in a written statement. “This bill will provide the state with access to the information necessary to assess the impact and potential risks of transportation of oil off our coast.”
The information will be used for planning purposes by the oil spill response administrator in the California Department of Fish and Game, the California Coastal Commission and the Air Resources Control Board.
