New Cathedral Opens Just Before Budget Cuts

Re “Archdiocese to Cut Programs, Jobs to Close Budget Gap,” Sept. 19:

“Dear Southern California Edison: It’s not that I don’t want to pay my electric bill, it’s just that I can’t because I have to use that money to pay for my new Rolls Royce.” That is the logic Cardinal Roger Mahony is using to defend the actions the Archdiocese of Los Angeles is taking to close a $4.3-million deficit by laying off scores of workers and shutting down much-needed ministries.

He insults my intelligence. Just 2.3% of the $189 million spent on Mahony’s Monstrosity would have saved all of those jobs and ministries, and 4.6% would have doubled those jobs and ministries and still left over $180 million to build. There is a definite parallel here between the new cathedral and the tower of Babel. Mahony’s explanation sounds like babble to me.
