* Maytag Corp. warned that third-quarter earnings would miss Wall Street expectations, hit by sluggish sales of appliances, lower production rates and the delayed launch of a washer. The company expects earnings from continuing operations to be 65 cents to 70 cents a share. Analysts pegged the company at 79 cents.

* U.S. retail gasoline prices fell 0.6 cent to $1.395 a gallon in the week ended Monday, the Energy Department reported, 9 cents lower than a year ago. Regular gasoline prices were highest on the West Coast, where they fell 1 cent to an average $1.514 a gallon.

* Nucor Corp. shares plunged 19% to $39.57 after the steelmaker said third-quarter earnings would miss forecasts. Profit will be 45 cents to 50 cents a share, compared with the 77 cents expected by Wall Street.
