Seismic Hazard Map Released by State
A seismic hazard map covering a 51-square-mile area in south Orange County--including parts of San Juan Capistrano, Rancho Santo Margarita and Coto de Caza--has been released by the state Department of Conservation.
The new Canada Gobernada quadrangle map shows which areas are in danger of landslides or liquefaction in the event of a strong earthquake. Property where a seismic hazard is identified is subject to special geological studies before most buildings can be constructed and special disclosure rules when they are sold.
The map is available for public review at local planning offices, the county recorder’s office and online at gmw.consrv.ca.gov/shmp. Copies may be purchased by calling the department at (213) 239-0878. It is one of 17 official seismic hazard maps in Orange County, part of an ongoing project to map the entire county.
