Cemetery Recommended for Monument Status

A City Council committee has voted to designate Westwood Village Memorial Park, burial place of Marilyn Monroe, Walter Matthau and other celebrities, as the city’s next historic-cultural monument.
The matter will now go to the full Los Angeles City Council, where it is expected to pass.
Councilman Jack Weiss, who heads the arts, health and humanities committee and represents Westwood, said proposed changes at such a “sensitive and sacred spot” should face extra review.
The designation would mean that applications for building permits would require review by the city’s Cultural Heritage Commission.
Service Corp. International, which owns the cemetery, has been seeking to expand crypt space.
