U.S. Help Sought to Get Suspect From Portugal

India is seeking diplomatic help from the United States to persuade Portugal to extradite alleged terrorist mastermind Abu Salem, who was arrested in Lisbon last week, Indian officials said. Salem, an Indian Muslim, is a prime suspect in a deadly bomb attack in 1993 that killed 257 people and wounded more than 1,000 in the country’s financial capital, Bombay.
Salem was arrested in Lisbon on Sept. 18 for possessing fake identity papers. Portugal said he would have to serve any local sentence before he could be deported.
