Storm Causes Closings, Outages in Appalachians

Schools were closed in several of North Carolina’s mountain counties, and some Virginia residents had no electricity after a storm dumped heavy, wet snow in the central Appalachians.

The mountains of eastern West Virginia received the heaviest snowfall, with 16.5 inches at Davis. Blacksburg, Va., collected 11 inches. A foot or more fell at Boone and West Jefferson in North Carolina.

Schools were closed in five North Carolina counties. American Electric Power reported 22,000 customers without power in southwestern Virginia and said some wouldn’t get service back until Thursday.
