U.S. Contractors Begin Circling

Share

I was incensed when I read “Builders Look at Iraq Project as Open Door” (March 31), that companies like Bechtel, Parsons and Fluor are jumping to write proposals for rebuilding Iraq and hoping for “much bigger deals to come.” So, President Bush, here is a great opportunity for you to make this war a profitable one for these American companies. Naturally, then, inflicting more damage on Iraq and its people would mean bigger deals and juicier profits. What a sickening thought indeed!

To read you correctly, two weeks before the war began, Halliburton’s (Vice President Dick Cheney’s former employer) Kellogg Brown & Root won a contract to put out oil well fires and handle other emergencies in Iraq. This bid was uncontested and not open to competition. With our people in harm’s way, fighting for Iraqi nation-building, it seems to me that Halliburton should do the right thing and do the job on a cost-plus-one-dollar basis!
