No Exit Fee for Those Who Make Own Power

PG&E; Corp., Edison International and Sempra Energy’s California power customers will be able to generate their own electricity without paying an exit fee to their local utility, the Public Utility Commission decided.

The fee would have helped cover the costs for power bought by the state’s Department of Water Resources during the 2001 California energy crisis, as well as pay for long-term electricity purchases by the agency.

Utility customers who install generators that produce less than 1 megawatt will not be required to pay the exit fee.
