Wizards Fall on Buzzer-Beater

Shareef Abdur-Rahim made a desperation shot at the buzzer to give the Atlanta Hawks a 91-89 victory over the Washington Wizards on Thursday at Atlanta.

Michael Jordan scored 12 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter and had a season-high 14 rebounds, but he also missed a potential winning shot. The Hawks rebounded the miss, called timeout and were given six-tenths of a second to get off a shot.

Abdur-Rahim, who had 24 points, took a long inbounds pass along the baseline and -- with Jordan guarding him -- threw up an off-balance shot that struck the rim, bounced high off the backboard and dropped through.

Washington’s playoff hopes took another major blow as the Wizards lost their fourth in a row. They fell 2 1/2 games behind Milwaukee for the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with only seven games left.

Utah 93, Portland 88 -- Karl Malone had 21 points and nine assists and John Stockton had 15 points and 10 assists to help the Jazz win at Portland, Ore.

Matt Harpring had 17 points, including a three-point basket with 17.1 seconds left that sealed the victory for the Jazz. Utah has won seven of eight and is within two games of Portland and Minnesota for the fourth playoff spot in the Western Conference.
