First-Grade Teacher Wins Presidential Award

A Ventura County teacher was one of four California educators awarded the prestigious 2002 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, state officials announced last week.

Charaline Maxim, 50, who teaches first grade at Mesa School in the Mesa Union School District in Somis, won the math award for elementary school teachers.

She will receive a citation signed by President Bush, a $7,500 grant to improve science and math instruction at her school and a trip to Washington, D.C., to attend the awards ceremony.
