The Kansas City Royals had the best record in spring training and after Saturday’s 3-1 victory over the Cleveland Indians at Kansas City, they are one of two teams with an unbeaten record in the regular season.

With a 5-0 start, they share the best record in the major leagues with San Francisco and are the first team to begin with five consecutive wins after having a 100-loss season.

“If you’ve been around baseball at all and have a perspective, you know we’ve got 157 games to go,” Brent Mayne said .

Runelvys Hernandez combined with Jason Grimsley and Mike MacDougal on a two-hitter. Hernandez (2-0) gave up one run and two hits in seven innings, struck out three and walked one.

The 5-0 start is the best in the history of the Royals, who were 62-100 last season. Three other teams started 4-0 after a 100-loss season -- the 1952 St. Louis Browns, 1906 Boston Bean Eaters and the 1899 St. Louis Perfectos -- but all lost their fifth games.

Chicago 7, Detroit 0 -- Mark Buehrle gave up only three hits -- all singles -- in eight innings and Sandy Alomar, Frank Thomas and Jose Valentin homered at Chicago. The temperature at game time was 32 degrees, the coldest home game for the White Sox since they started recording temperatures in 1990.

Baltimore 2, Boston 1 -- Red Sox reliever Chad Fox walked Tony Batista with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth inning. The defeat ended a four-game winning streak for the Red Sox.

Tampa Bay 6, New York 5 -- Al Martin singled over a drawn-in outfield with one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning to hand the Yankees their first loss of the season. The Devil Rays loaded the bases when Carl Crawford singled, Rocco Baldelli doubled and Aubrey Huff drew an intentional walk.

Texas 8, Seattle 4 -- Juan Gonzalez homered twice and drove in four runs and Alex Rodriguez and Hank Blalock also homered for the Rangers at Arlington, Texas. Gonzalez, who has 408 career home runs, moved past Duke Snider for 33rd on the all-time list.
