If It’s April, It’s Open Season on Dodgers

After Sunday’s game (a Dodger loss) with the San Francisco Giants, Jim Tracy stated, “Those are two really good teams that just played three games out there in the past few days.”

Is this guy in the same ballpark watching the same games the rest of us are?

I know it’s only mid-April, but the Dodgers are on pace to finish 84 games behind the Giants by season’s end!

How many years now? How many consecutive years have we all known that the Dodgers can’t score any runs? Yet, what do they ever do about it? Do they attempt to get players who walk? Who get on base?

Why must we put up with an infield in which three-fourths of it are absolutely horrible at the plate, and the other one passed his prime eight years ago?

Please, Dan Evans, scour the waiver wire, scour your minor leagues, do something, and find guys who can get on base!

Bill Plaschke’s column (April 18) on Adrian Beltre’s lack of production was well done, but Beltre is merely the latest in an incredibly long line of third basemen the Dodgers have tried at the hot corner since Ron Cey left. Remember Bill Madlock? How about Tracy Woodson? Jeff Hamilton?

Scott Rolen is a good player, but the truth is that he has very little competition for a starting spot in the All-Star game at third base. There just aren’t that many good ones around.

I sat in shock during the off-season as the Dodgers chose to sign Fred McGriff over Cliff Floyd. Typical Dodger move, favoring affordability over productivity. However, as I watch Fred McGriff start out the season, I can admit that I’d be proud to have McGriff retire as a Dodger ... by midseason, preferably.
