Teemu Selanne, the San Jose Sharks’ leading scorer, became a free agent Monday when he decided not to exercise a player option in his contract for next season.

Selanne scored 28 goals and had 64 points this season, leading the Sharks in both categories. He was named the Sharks’ most valuable player.

“We like Teemu, and we wanted him back, but we very much respect his decision,” team president Greg Jamison said. “He wants to take a look at some things, and we respect that.”

Detroit Red Wing defenseman Chris Chelios withdrew from the U.S. team International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship two days after being added to the squad. Chelios cited personal reasons for his decision not to play. Defensemen Joe Corvo of the Kings and Mike Mottau of Calgary will replace Chelios.
