A torrent of mud and boulders swept through a hamlet in eastern Guatemala, killing seven people and leaving more than a dozen missing, authorities said. The avalanche hit the isolated mountain village of El Chichicaste at dawn, burying several homes and setting off a chaotic search for survivors, said Julio Fuentes, a local priest.

The victims included a 9-year-old girl, a spokesman for the federal emergency department said. Officials said 14 people were missing. Six homes were buried while the inhabitants slept.
