Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo’s political party threatened a crackdown on any mass protests over an election victory that opponents say was rigged. Several opposition parties hinted at violent unrest and some called for a boycott of local elections for state parliaments on May 3.

Obasanjo’s People’s Democratic Party warned that he would stamp out any uprising. “Rebellion is unconstitutional, illegitimate and despicable. Any rebellion will be crushed,” said party chairman Audu Ogbeh.
