From Times Wire Reports

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed protecting 6,000 acres in San Diego and Orange counties to bolster the survival of the endangered San Diego fairy shrimp.

A proposal published Tuesday in the Federal Register suggests “critical habitat” designation for rare vernal pools in southern Orange County and in the San Diego County communities of San Marcos, Ramona and Carlsbad. It asked for public comment on whether protection should be implemented for parts of the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base.

Public comment on the proposal will be accepted by the Fish and Wildlife Service through June 23.
