No. Team;Player;P;HT;WT;College;It’s a fact;Sam Farmer’s Comment

1. Cincinnati; Carson Palmer; QB; 6-5; 232; USC; Heisman Trophy winner threw for 3,639 yards, 32 touchdowns last season.;Fourth quarterback selected No. 1 in the last five years.

2. Detroit; Charles Rogers; WR; 6-2; 202; Michigan St.; Biletnikoff Award winner caught 13 touchdown passes last season.;Now the Lions have to worry about signing him.

3. Houston; Andre Johnson; WR; 6-3; 230; Miami; Big East 60-meter indoor, 100-meter outdoor champion in ’02.;Johnson is muscular and great over the middle, and can stretch the field too.

4. New York Jets (a); Dewayne Robertson; DT; 6-1; 317; Kentucky; Scouts stunned by 4.9-second time in 40, blistering for someone that big.; Robertson has been compared to a young Warren Sapp -- and Robertson didn’t have Sapp’s supporting cast.

5. Dallas; Terence Newman; CB; 5-10; 189; Kansas St.; Jim Thorpe Award winner had 54 tackles, five interceptions.;Cowboys considered trying to trade up for Robertson, but say they’re delighted to get Newman.

6. New Orleans (b); Johnathan Sullivan; DT; 6-3; 313; Georgia; Had 74 tackles last season, 15 behind line of scrimmage.; Sullivan went a little earlier than many people expected, but Saints clearly like his quickness for a big man.

7. Jacksonville; Byron Leftwich; QB; 6-5; 241; Marshall; Passed for 4,268 yards, 30 touchdowns last season; Mark Brunell has two years left on his contract, but will he want to be around?

8. Carolina; Jordan Gross; T; 6-5; 300; Utah; Started at every offensive line position but center.; Gross should start at right tackle, unstable since Chris Terry was released for disciplinary reasons midway last season.

9. Minnesota (c); Kevin Williams; DT; 6-5; 304; Okla. St.; Had 61 tackles, seven sacks last season.; Vikings dropped two spots because, incredibly, they couldn’t get their pick in in time.

10. Baltimore;Terrell Suggs; DE; 6-3; 262; Arizona St.; Lombardi Trophy winner had 24 sacks.;Suggs will play outside linebacker for the Ravens, where he will be opposite Peter Boulware.

11. Seattle; Marcus Trufant; CB; 5-11; 199; Wash. St.; Didn’t allow a touchdown reception the last two seasons.; The fourth cornerback taken by Seahawks in three years, but the first first-rounder since Shawn Springs in 1997.

12. St. Louis; Jimmy Kennedy; DT; 6-4; 322; Penn St.; Had as many tackles behind line (39) as former Nittany Lion LaVar Arrington.; Stunned and delighted Rams had Kennedy ranked among the top five picks.

13. New England (d); Ty Warren; DE; 6-5; 307; Texas A&M; His uncle Curtis Dickey was A&M; running back and Colts’ first pick in 1980.;Warren is bright and a good fit in Bill Belichick’s complicated defensive scheme.

14. Chicago (e); Michael Haynes;DE; 6-4; 281; Penn St.; Had 80 tackles, Big Ten-leading 15 sacks last season.; Haynes fits in well for a team that lost its top sacker, linebacker Rosevelt Colvin, to free agency.

15. Philadelphia (f); Jerome McDougle; DE; 6-2; 264; Miami; Brother of Lions’ tackle Stockar McDougle.;He could lessen the sting of losing Hugh Douglas, who left for Jacksonville.

16. Pittsburgh (g); Troy Polamalu;S; 5-10; 206; USC; Had 68 tackles, three sacks, one interception last season.;With Lee Flowers gone, the Steelers needed a safety who could step right in and contribute immediately.

17. Arizona (h); Bryant Johnson; WR; 6-2; 214; Penn St.; Has blazing speed: 10.65 seconds in the 100 meters.; Cardinals no longer have receivers David Boston, MarTay Jenkins or Frank Sanders, so drafting Johnson is a good start.

18. Arizona (i); Calvin Pace; DE; 6-4; 269; Wake Forest; First Wake Forest player picked in first round since Norm Snead in 1961.; Cardinals had just 21 sacks last season and a paltry 19 the season before that.

19. Baltimore (j); Kyle Boller; QB; 6-3; 232; California; Can kneel at 50-yard line and throw a spiral 60 yards through the uprights.; Chris Redman can hold down the position in the short term, but the Ravens need quarterback stability.

20. Denver; George Foster; T; 6-5; 338; Georgia; Broke wrist in auto accident, played most of season with cast on right arm.; Broncos need depth at tackle and better pass-blocking than they got last season.

21. Cleveland; Jeff Faine; C; 6-2; 303; Notre Dame; Finalist for the Rimington Award.;Browns are hurting for linebackers, so this was a curious pick. Faine can start right away, though.

22. Chicago (k); Rex Grossman; QB; 6-1; 217; Florida; Second in Heisman Trophy balloting as a sophomore in 2001.; Bears got a good quarterback prospect and kept him away from Green Bay, which also wanted him.

23. Buffalo (l); Willis McGahee; RB; 6-0; 223; Miami; He’s way ahead of rehab schedule after a devastating knee injury.; It’s a strange, risky pick, considering the Bills already have good backs in Travis Henry and Olandis Gary.

24. Indianapolis; Dallas Clark; TE; 6-3; 257; Iowa; John Mackey Award winner averaged 18 yards a catch after third game.; Peyton Manning misses the blocking and hands of Ken Dilger. Maybe Clark can eventually fill that void.

25. New York Giants; William Joseph; DT; 6-5; 308; Miami; Giants also drafted a Miami player in first round last year, Jeremy Shockey; Joseph had only five sacks last season -- half as many as he had the year before -- but he was a Lombardi finalist.

26. San Francisco; Kwame Harris; T; 6-7; 310; Stanford; All-Pac-10 first-team player, and on conference’s all-academic team as well.; 49ers are looking to groom a replacement for left tackle Derrick Deese. They know Harris well.

27. Kansas City (m); Larry Johnson; RB; 6-1; 228; Penn St.; Only ninth Division I player to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a season.;Johnson must buck trend of Penn State backs who were NFL busts: D.J. Dozier, Blair Thomas, Ki-Jana Carter, Curtis Enis.

28. Tennessee; Andre Woolfolk; CB; 6-1; 197; Oklahoma; Also played wide receiver for the Sooners.; Titans have lost Donald Mitchell and Dainon Sidney, so they need cornerbacks in the worst way.

29. Green Bay; Nick Barnett; LB; 6-2; 236; Oregon St.; Had 121 tackles, six sacks last season.;Packers didn’t draft a linebacker last year, so they were due to shop for some fresh bodies.

30. San Diego (n); Sammy Davis; CB; 6-0; 186; Texas A&M; The “Candy Man” had 11 interceptions in college career.; Davis joins a secondary that will be entirely retooled. The Chargers hope he can start opposite Quentin Jammer.

31. Oakland; Nnamdi Asomugha; CB; 6-2; 213; California; Played cornerback and safety. Had 53 tackles last season.;He can learn how to play safety from Rod Woodson, then possibly step in when Woodson is ready to call it quits.

32. Oakland (o); Tyler Brayton; DE; 6-6; 277; Colorado; Played tackle and end and was All-Big 12.; Raiders need defensive end with Trace Armstrong at the end of his career and Tony Bryant coming off neck injury.
