Mondesi Helps End Diamondback Streak

Alex Cintron hit a game-tying home run and Raul Mondesi delivered an RBI double in the ninth inning, rallying the Arizona Diamondbacks over the Chicago Cubs, 4-3, Saturday at Wrigley Field.

The Diamondbacks ended a losing streak at six games and also ended a club-record 10-game road losing streak.

Arizona trailed, 3-2, before Cintron led off with a homer against closer Joe Borowski (1-2). Luis Gonzalez followed with an infield single and scored one out later on Mondesi’s double.

San Diego 6-4, Philadelphia 4-10 -- Jake Peavy (9-8) allowed only two hits in seven shutout innings, and Phil Nevin homered and drove in four runs in the first game at Philadelphia.

The wild card-leading Phillies had their winning streak stopped at four. Nevin hit a three-run shot off All-Star Randy Wolf (11-6) in the fifth inning to give the Padres a 6-0 lead.

Placido Polanco and Bobby Abreu drove in three runs apiece to lead the Phillies in the second game of the first scheduled doubleheader at Veterans Stadium since Aug. 10, 1985.

Montreal 7, Milwaukee 1 -- Javier Vazquez struck out 11 and also hit a two-run single in front of a crowd of 22,280 as the Expos honored new Hall of Famer Gary Carter.

Vazquez (9-7) gave up an unearned run while allowing eight hits and walking one. He raised his season strikeout total to 171, second in the league to Chicago’s Kerry Wood (182).

Florida 5, Houston 2 -- Mike Lowell hit a three-run homer -- his 30th of the season -- and Carl Pavano (8-10) held the Astros without a hit until the sixth inning at Miami.

The Marlins improved to 7-1 on their homestand with one game left. The Astros had their lead in the Central Division reduced to one game over St. Louis.

Pittsburgh 1, Colorado 0 -- Brian Meadows (2-1), who took Jeff Suppan’s spot in the Pirate rotation, pitched seven shutout innings at Pittsburgh. He allowed five singles in his second start of the season and first since May 25.

Abraham Nunez, whose son, Abraham Jr., was born 2 1/2 hours before the game, drove in the only run with a second-inning groundout.

St. Louis 10, New York 9 -- Rookie Bo Hart hit his first career grand slam, Albert Pujols hit his 30th homer -- a 440-foot solo shot that extended his hitting streak to 17 games -- and the Cardinals withstood a five-run rally in the ninth inning at New York.
