Judge Freezes Logging in Jackson State Forest
A judge has tossed out a state environmental study and management plan for Jackson State Forest, a 50,000-acre redwood forest near Fort Bragg.
Mendocino County Superior Court Judge Richard J. Henderson ruled that the state Department of Forestry study didn’t adequately describe the forest or assess the plan’s environmental impact. The Campaign to Restore Jackson State Redwood Forest and Forests Forever filed a lawsuit challenging the plan.
In July, a state appellate court barred timber harvesting under two 1999 plans after one of the groups appealed a decision to allow logging there. The latest ruling will halt any logging authorized since Nov. 6, when the state plan was approved.
