A Home Remedy for Hong Kong Ills
An accurate assessment of Hong Kong’s reality, Xiao-huang Yin’s “An Economic Flu” (Opinion, Aug. 3) is thought-provoking. Hong Kong’s “flu” was caused by Asian financial crises, recessions and the recent outbreak of SARS. But the flu cannot be cured by Western political antibiotics or vaccinations. Recovery for Hong Kong’s economy lies in its ability to carve out a wider share of the China market. With an 8% increase in retail sales in China last year, middle- and upper-middle-class Chinese families’ purses could give a healthy injection to Hong Kong’s economy.
