Oxnard Mayor Manuel Lopez on Wednesday officially announced his candidacy for county supervisor.

Lopez, 76, who has served as mayor of the county’s largest city for 12 years, said the supervisor’s job would give him a better opportunity to serve the public.

“I want to help provide a new perspective in county government,” Lopez said as about 40 supporters gathered for his announcement at Plaza Park.

Lopez is the second politician to challenge veteran incumbent John K. Flynn for the March primary in the heavily Latino 5th District.

Fellow Councilman John Zaragoza announced his intention to run in February and has already secured endorsements from the Sheriff’s Department and Oxnard Police Department.

Lopez has dismissed concerns that two Latinos on the ballot would split votes and virtually guarantee Flynn reelection. “I have a lot of faith in the voters in the city of Oxnard,” Lopez said. “I think the times when people voted strictly on ethnicity, at least in this area, have passed.”
