America West Slashes First-Class Fares

America West Airlines, the eighth-largest U.S. carrier, reduced first-class fares by as much as 70%, leading at least three other airlines to cut some prices.
AMR Corp.’s American Airlines, the world’s largest carrier, matched the fares on “certain competitive routes,” said a spokesman. Delta Air Lines Inc., the third-largest, also matched the sale, and Northwest Airlines Corp. “selectively” matched.
