Average ACT Score for State Highest in 37 Years

The average composite score for California high school seniors taking the ACT college entrance exam edged up slightly in the last year, reaching its highest level in the 37 years that records have been kept.

The California average for seniors who graduated this year was 21.5, up from 21.4 for each of the three previous years, and ahead of the national average, which remained at 20.8 for the second consecutive year. The exam is scored on a scale of 1 to 36, with 36 being best.

ACT Inc., the Iowa City, Iowa-based nonprofit organization that owns and administers the exam, also said that the number of California students taking the test jumped by 7,866 to 48,610. That amounts to 15% of the state’s high school seniors.
