Ellis Carry-Over Hits $280,000

Share

Those who are impressed with two- and three-day carry-overs in the pick six should take a look at what has gone on at Ellis Park for nearly a month.

Not since July 25 -- 17 racing days -- has somebody been able to isolate the final six winners of the day at the track in Henderson, Ky.

Because the pick six is not a popular wager in that part of the country, the carry-over isn’t as large as one might think, but it is still sizable as Ellis Park kicks off a new week.

What began as a $980 carry-over when nobody had all six winners July 26 has swelled to more than $280,000.

Players at Del Mar and its simulcast facilities will be able to bet today on the Ellis pick six, which begins with a 5 1/2-furlong turf sprint for $15,000 claimers.

The other races in the sequence are a $5,000 maiden claimer for older fillies and mares, a turf route for 2-year-old maiden fillies, a starter allowance dash for older fillies and mares, a starter allowance at 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf for older males and another $5,000 maiden claimer for fillies and mares.

The most likely single is Brown Eyed Major, who will be ridden by John McKee in the ninth. The Major Impact gelding has been first and second in his last two races over the course at the distance.

Race of the day: Echo Eddie, King Robyn and Menacing Dennis are among seven set for today’s $75,000-added Green Flash Handicap at five furlongs on the Del Mar turf. Thunder Bullet, who, like King Robyn, is trained by Jeff Mullins, the Thoroughbred Corp.-owned entry of Swiss Lake and Ecstatic and Mister Cosmi complete the lineup.

One for the road: Cat Buster debuts for trainer Steve Asmussen in today’s fourth at Saratoga, a $45,000 maiden race for 2-year-olds at five furlongs. The barn has a good record with horses running for the first time and with 2-year-olds, and the son of Tale of the Cat is a half brother to the multiple stakes winner Housebuster.
