Bryans Are Chosen for Davis Cup Team

French Open champions Mike and Bob Bryan of Camarillo were selected Thursday for the Davis Cup team to play against Slovakia, becoming only the second set of brothers to make the same U.S. Davis Cup team, according to the USTA.

In 1903, Robert and George Wrenn played against Great Britain in the challenge round.

The other four players joining the Bryans for the relegation match, Sept. 19-21 in Bratislava, are Andy Roddick, James Blake, Mardy Fish and Brian Vahaly. U.S. Captain Patrick McEnroe will eventually have to trim the squad from six to four players. The Americans need to win to avoid relegation.

Former champion Marat Safin of Russia and Guillermo Canas of Argentina withdrew from the U.S. Open on Thursday. Both are recovering from wrist injuries.

Safin, who won the Open in 2000, had been seeded 26th, and Canas was not seeded. Safin’s place in the draw was taken by No. 33-ranked Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina.

Tim Henman of England is ranked 34th and, as of now, remains set to play Roddick in the first round.

Top-seeded Lindsay Davenport beat Magui Serna, 6-0, 7-5, to advance to the semifinals of the Pilot Pen tournament at New Haven, Conn.

Davenport, ranked No. 4, has reached the final three of the last four years, losing each time to Venus Williams, a four-time Pilot Pen champion who skipped the tournament this week because of an abdominal strain.

Davenport will face unseeded Elena Dementieva, who beat Cara Black, 6-1, 6-1.

Second-seeded Amelie Mauresmo defeated Ai Sugiyama, 6-4, 6-4, and No. 3 Jennifer Capriati beat Anna Pistolesi, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1.

Pistolesi, coming off wins in Poland and Finland, had won 12 consecutive matches.

Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand beat Sargis Sargsian of Armenia, 6-3, 6-4, to reach the quarterfinals of the TD Waterhouse Cup at Commack, N.Y.

Also advancing were Jeff Morrison, who defeated Mikhail Youzhny of Russia, 7-6 (7), 6-3; Nicolas Kiefer of Germany, who beat Flavio Saretta of Brazil, 6-3, 6-1; and Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina, who defeated Olivier Rochus of Belgium 7-6 (3), 6-1.
