A Garberville man whose wife died after she fell from their car after a night of drinking was sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

Robert Lawrence Pollette, 43, was originally charged with homicide in the Jan. 3, 2002, death of his wife, Susan Marie Pollette. Pollette said he and his wife, 46, were heading home from a bar when she fell out of the car.

Statements made at the sentencing indicated that Pollette told authorities that he got her back in the car, took her home and put her to bed, unconscious, then left her without medical attention for 18 hours.

“This was an accident -- I did not kill my wife,” Pollette told the court before apologizing to the family.
